Sparta Approves Bid To Demolish Two Buildings

Sparta Aldermen approved bids to demolish two buildings within city limits during Thursday night’s Aldermen meeting.

One building located at 211 West Bockman Way. The old Baker School building located at 321 East Bronson Street. City Administrator Tonya Tindle said the old Baker School building has asbestos, causing a hike in the cost of the demolition. Public Works Director Dillard Quick.

“It’s actually in the mastic and the flooring and it does have some in the tile,” Quick said. “It’s actually got some in the roof as well. One of the roof layers has got asbestos in it.”

Tindle said the city received a total of eight bids and the cost to demolish the old Baker School is an estimated $54,000. Lowery said he was surprised as the lowest bid came in much lower than the rest of the bids.

“That bid came in at a total which was a shock to us for $100,000 less than the next lowest one,” Lowery said.

Tindle said she knew the building located on 211 West Bockman Way did not have any asbestos in it. The cost to demolish the Bockman Way building is an estimated $27,500.

In other business, The aldermen approved updates to building permit fees on final reading.

Aldermen approved a $95,713.50 circuit switch for the new Transformer at the substation. Tindle said this had to be purchased ahead of the installation of the new transformer in 2026.

The aldermen approved the hiring recommendation of a truck driver for the Sanitation Department. The aldermen approved the hiring of a Sewer Plant Operator in training. The board approved a volunteer firefighter application.
