Cobb Focused On Next Game, Not Awards

Sophomore point guard Ty Cobb saw his success at Upperman rewarded with a nomination for Mr. Basketball.

Cobb selected as one of three players in Class 3A. With the selection, Cobb became the first Upperman player ever to be nominated as a finalist for Mr. Basketball. Cobb said his only focus remains the next game and who they are playing.

“We all come out and we play really well together and move the ball and stuff and play real hard.” Cobb said. “We’re trying to focus on our defense right now and get better at defense, move the ball and stuff. We’ve come out and played really well so far, we just got to keep it going throughout the course of the season.”

Cobb this season also eclipsed 1,000 points for his career. Upperman begins play this week in the post-season tournament.

“It was great.” Cobb said. “It is a big deal, it is a career accomplishment but that’s not really my focus on the season…my goal is to get to the championship and win the state championship.”

Cobb said he waited all his life to play basketball for Upperman and head coach Bobby McWilliams.

“They help me out a lot. They each work on different parts of my game.” Cobb said about the coaching staff. “They’re all on different areas of my game and it helps me get better every single game.”
