Some One Million Dollars Reserved For UC In State Child Care Grant Program

Two State Departments have allocated some one million dollars for Upper Cumberland child care.

UCDD Executive Director Mark Farley said the two departments are working on a grant program to establish more licensed daycares.

“Pickett and Van Buren have none,” Farley said. “Jackson and Clay have one each. So, those are areas we are going to initially look at and see if we can put some money into to to try to generate some.”

Farley said there will be enough money for all counties of the region to benefit. Farley said the need for more daycare facilities is high in the region.

“It looks like this program may repeat again next year, so it may turn into a multiple year process,” Farley said. “I know childcare is a huge huge issue, and that is something we can hopefully start addressing.”

Farley said the funding comes from the state departments of Community Economic Development and Human Services. Farley said it can be put into facilities and equipment for those looking to start a childcare service.

“If you got somebody that is looking to move into and provide licenses daycare, now is a great opportunity for them to do that,” Farley said.

Farley said UCDD has been in contact with the four counties most in need and have potential suitors.
