Sex Abuse Report Names Two Former UC Priests

The Diocese of Nashville has published a list accusing two former Cookeville priests of sexually abusing a minor.

The diocese identified the local priests as Father Edward Albert Walenga and Father James Murphy Jr. Both men previously served at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.

The publication said Walenga died in November of 1983 and Murphy passed away in October of 2016.

The list included the names of 11 other priests who served in the Nashville diocese and were accused of sexually abusing a minor. Of the 13, nine have died and two continue to serve time in prison.

The Diocese of Nashville said it chose to release the names in the wake of the Pennsylvania grand jury report last summer that outlined allegations from six dioceses in that state.
