SeedFork of The Highlands will tell the story of local food Sunday as it hosts a Culinary Crawl.
SeedFork of the Highlands Chairman Rodney Laulo said events like this help support the group’s mission of connecting the Cookeville community through local food and healthy eating. He said setting up things like community gardens help kids see the importance of fresh, local food.
“Because we believe that if we can teach kids about great foods, how to eat better, how to grow for themselves, that they will make that difference for the future,” Laulo said. “We are really looking to invest in kids.”
Laulo said the current generation of local farmers that are helping SeedFork’s mission include Waters and Stockton Farms. Laulo said building relationships with local farmers makes farm to table possible.
“They actually have launched a new non-profit organization called Cookeville Locally Grown,” Laulo said.” They are focusing really on the food production side and really keeping that pipeline, and connecting with the farmers.”
Another program made possible by Seedfork’s fundraising efforts is the 1,000 days program. Laulo said this is about educating families about healthy eating in the critical time between a child’s conception and 2nd birthday.
“Impact them with healthy foods, with learning about how to cook, with learning about how to eat better,” Laulo said. “Even as simple as how to read labels when you go to the store.”
Sunday’s farm to table dinner will begin at Red Silo Brewing Company at 4pm. Tickets can be purchased at Red Silo Brewing Co. and Back Room Bistro.
