Search Has Begun For Cookeville’s New Fire Chief

The search for Cookeville’s new fire chief is underway.

City Manager James Mills said the city plans on working with MTAS to find the right person for the job.

“We’re looking for someone of course who is an experienced firefighter,” Mills said. “Energetic, teambuilder, and especially with exceptional leadership skills.”

Mills said that they are conducting a statewide search to replace Chief Daryl Blair, but current employees are eligible to apply.

The city announced Chief Blair’s intent to retire last Friday afternoon, effective this coming Friday. Mills said that while it was a recent decision on Blair’s part to retire, it’s not surprising after 30 years of service.

“I get a lot of our directors who have 30 years or more and  it’s certainly crossed their minds,” Mills said.

He said that they hope to fill the position in the next two months.
