Rodgers Named New Putnam Words On Wheels Bus Coordinator

Dr. Mark Rodgers has been named the new Putnam County Words On Wheels bus coordinator.

Rodgers will take over from the retiring Barbara Greeson. Rodgers has been with the early literacy program since its inception. He said its efforts in bringing the joys of reading and learning to children are key in bettering the future of the community.

“A really important part of our future,” Rodgers said. “Our future isn’t necessarily always something that’s external to Cookeville or Putnam County, it’s right here on the swingset next door.”

Rodgers said that after having the bus parked last year due to the pandemic, he looks forward to expanding its efforts. He said that currently, its main focus is covering the Putnam County area. He said that’s connected with representatives from similar literacy programs, including the Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation, and hopes to grow through continued networking.

Rodgers said the W.O.W. bus has been donating books for around three years. He said that the bus has thousands of books packed away in storage to bring to children and their families so that they might start their own home libraries.

“It is truly amazing to watch these children’s faces when they get to take home a book,” Rodgers said.

Rodgers said that the most redeeming part of his work with the organization has been getting to work with kids. He said he has always loved working with children, and having the opportunity to help them with their education is something he’s excited to continue.

Book donations are accepted all year long at the Board of Education office in Cookeville.
