Resolution Going To Nashville To Make Virgin Falls A State Park

A resolution for the Virgin Falls Natural Area to become a State Park is headed to Nashville.

The White County Commission approved the the motion unanimously during Monday’s meeting. County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson said if the General Assembly is in favor, the over 1,000 acre area can become a destination.

“Oh, absolutely some benefits,” Robinson said. “Tourism. That is the big thing. People bringing money from outside and bringing it here and leaving it here, and that is what we want.”

Robinson said the county has partnered with many organizations and worked for years to get to this point. Robinson said the request should be heard during this legislation cycle.

“We are hopeful that this will get done during this legislation period,” Robinson said. “It has come to the point now that it is ready to present, and it is ready to happen. We are hoping the state recognizes the efforts that’s been put in there.”

Commissioner Cain Rogers said the county’s Chamber of Commerce and the Highlands Economic Partnership helped draft the resolution. The natural area is made up of 1,157 acres with the 110 foot Virgin Falls being the main attraction.

In other business, the commission approved the resignation of District 7 Commissioner Bobby McCulley. According to Rogers, McCulley moved out of district creating the vacancy. The empty seat was not addressed during Monday’s meeting.

A resolution to apply for a Community Development Block Grant for two fire trucks was also approved. As a part of the application process, Robinson said residents will receive a phone survey to determine who is awarded.
