Memorial services for Carolyn Southerland Langston, age 79, of Cookeville will be held Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at 11:00 am in the chapel of Presley Funeral Home. Ms. Langston passed away Saturday, February 3, 2018 at NHC Healthcare of Cookeville where she had worked for 35 years. She was born April 3, 1938 to the late James Harvey and Rebecca Glover White. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Southerland and a son, Kevin Southerland. Carolyn is survived by one son, Michael Southerland of Baxter; three stepdaughters, Stephanie Harley and Dane Randolph of Cookeville and Stacy Gilmer of Nashville; sister, Kathy Nash of Baxter; brother, James C. White of Brighton, MI; three granddaughters, Amanda Southerland, Sarah Southerland, and Krystal Flatt; seven grandsons, Austin Harley, Jacob Harley, Ty Randolph, Bryson Randolph, Daniel Randolph, Tim Johnston, and Joey Gilmer; three great grandchildren, Meshala Southerland, DeShawn Southerland and Jaylin Thrasher. The family will receive friends Wednesday 9:00 am until service time at the funeral home.
Funeral services for Mrs. Joyce Faye Bilbrey, age 75, of Livingston, will be conducted 10 a.m., Thursday, February 8, 2018 from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home. Rev. Dee Wells will officiate. Burial will be in the Overton County Memorial Gardens. The family will welcome friends on Wednesday evening, February 7, 2018 from 5 until 9 p.m. Mrs. Joyce Faye Bilbrey passed from this life on Monday evening, February 5, 2018 from the Overton County Health & Rehab. She was born in Overton County on September 21, 1942 to the late Roy Lee & Jewel Amelia Flatt Ledbetter. Joyce was a member of the First Baptist Church of Livingston. She loved being outside in her yard, getting her hands dirty and working in her flowers and garden. Joyce had a green thumb for growing beautiful flowers and plants. She was always looking out for her friends and neighbors making sure everyone had a meal to eat. Joyce enjoyed traveling the country side with her best friend Richard Winton. She loved people and being with her children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren. Joyce is survived by her lifetime friend, Richard Winton of Livingston; son, Mike Savage & wife Dieanna of Livingston; daughters, Rita Copeland & husband Mike of Monroe & Regina Boykin & husband Richard, of Rickman; grandchildren, Kyle Copeland & wife Ashley, Kelsey Copeland, Colby Boykin & wife Savannah, Ashley Dobbs & husband Ben, Alexis, Aspen & Airica Savage; great grandchildren, Koda Copeland, Kole Copeland, Hadlee Boykin & Jettie Mabry; sisters, Dalphine Carmack & husband Gruder, Lorene Daniel, Sue Buck & husband Bruce, Patricia White, Fern Savage & Judy Wright & husband Bill; brother, David Ledbetter. In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Bilbrey; & brother, Donald Ledbetter.
Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Dobson, age 90 of Cookeville will be held Thursday February 8 at 12 noon in the Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Mrs. Dobson’s family will receive friends Thursday from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Interment will be Friday at 12:30 p.m. (EST) at Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga. Mrs. Dobson died Sunday February 4, 2018 at 10:45 a.m. in Heritage Pointe Assisted Living in Cookeville. She was born January 30, 1928 in Cherokee County, Alabama to the late William Floyd and Grace Peek Prince. She graduated from Southern Business University in Atlanta, Georgia. After graduation, she was Secretary to the President of the University of North Georgia. She was employed by the Neurosurgical Group in Chattanooga as the Comptroller and retired after 29 years. As a longstanding member of Brainerd Baptist Church, she enjoyed teaching Sunday School in the Beginner Department. Her strong Christian faith and love for others were a very important part of her life. This was often seen in her unselfish gift of caring for others. She always put God first, others second, and herself last.
Funeral services for Mr. Roy Elrod, age 92 of Sparta, will be conducted 1:00pm Thursday, February 8, 2018 from the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Carter Cemetery with full military honors presented by the Veterans’ Honor Guard. Mr. Elrod passed away Monday afternoon February 5, 2018 at Raintree Manor in McMinnville. Mr. Elrod was born November 15, 1925 in White County to the late Alonzo & Susie Abston Elrod. He was retired from the City of Sparta Public Works Department and served his country in World War II with the U.S. Army. Roy loved woodworking, gardening and landscaping; however, most of all he loved his wife to whom he dedicated his life. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by sisters Mary Bussell, Monie “Sis” Petty; brothers Varris, Van and Jack Dempsey Elrod. His surviving family includes his beloved wife of 64 years, Louise Hawkins Elrod, special niece and caregiver, Marie Thomas and husband Mike, and several other nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5-8:00pm at Hunter Funeral Home. Bro. Fred Hawkins and Bro. Thomas McCulley will officiate.
Funeral services for Mr. George Washington McCormick, 84 of Silver Point and formerly of Nashville, will be held Friday, February 9th at 1:00 p.m. at the Baxter chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Cemetery. Rev. Tony Crow will officiate. George’s family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 8 p.m. and again Friday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. He died Monday February 5, 2018 in Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Memorial services for Mr. David Wayne Sherrell, age 66, of Sparta, will be conducted 1:00pm Friday, February 9, 2018 from the Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home with burial to follow in Plainview Cemetery in the Cassville Community. The family will receive friends from 11-1:00pm Friday at Hunter Funeral Home. Mr. Sherrell passed away Saturday morning February 3, 2018 at St. Thomas Highlands Hospital. When he was only 12 years old, Wayne began his lifelong journey into the world of firefighting, as he became a well-known face at the old city hall, on Bockman Way, where he would assist in all aspects of dispatching and provide aid to anyone who entered the doors. Wayne also delved into the world of photography, which led him to become one of the youngest employees at The Expositor in the early 1960’s. He continued his employment at the newspaper for several years and even ventured out on his own with a smaller publication. He also worked at Sparta Police Department where he was responsible for obtaining grants that helped the department grow and flourish in its mission of protecting the residents of Sparta. Wayne also served as a dispatcher and would work countless hours to ensure his beloved hometown was safe. Wayne continued his career in emergency services and became the director of White County E-911 where he remained until his declining health caused him to retire.
Funeral services for Mrs. Thelma Jean Miller, age 74 of Hilham, will be held Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11 AM from the Chapel of the Hall Funeral Home of Livingston with burial to follow in the Honey Springs Cemetery located in Crawford. Mrs. Miller passed away on Sunday Morning February 4, 2018 at the Livingston Regional Hospital. Mrs. Miller was born in Twinton, Overton Co. on May 7, 1943 to the late James Frank and Happy (Abston) Hammock. She was a very loving and caring person. She never met a stranger. She was a wonderful sister, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved being with her family and going to church. Mrs. Miller is surveved by 2 Sons: Ronnie Paul of Carryington, Richard Paul of Knoxville; 4 Daughters: Kimberly Cook of Hilham, Kelly Abston of Nashville, Elaine Draise of Hamilton, OH, Lisa Marino of Tampa, FL; 3 Sisters and which were her caregivers: Delorse O’Brien of Hilham, Wanda Neely and her husband James of Hilham, Judy Wisner and her husband Jay of Anderson, IN; 2 Brothers: Jessie Hammock and his wife Misty of Anderson, IN, Jackie hammock and his wife Debbie of Anderson, IN; 2 Sisters in-law: Julia Hammock of Anderson, IN, Helen Rains of New Castle, IN; 1 Brother in-law: Roger Miller and his wife Connie of Anderson, IN; A special family friend: Leroy Phillips; 19 Grandchildren, 14 Great Grandchildren; A host of nieces,nephews, family and friends also survive. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Miller is preceded in death by Husband: Kenneth R. Miller; 2 Sisters: Billie Jo Clark, Peggy Scherer; 3 brothers: James Hammock, Jr., Johnny Hammock, Jimmy Hammock; Brother in-law: Guy “Pete” Rains. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening, February 9, 2018 starting at 4 PM until 8 PM. Officiating at the service will be Bro. Ricardo Rodriguez.
