Putnam Fair Board President Feels Excitement About Fair In New Location

Putnam County Fair Board President John Allen said the reality of a fairgrounds sale has set in.

Allen said he thinks the potential finality of this year being the last at the current location will bring a big turnout to relive the memories. However, Allen said it is not a sad time for him.

He said he’s already looking towards the future.

“We have no choice if we want to really develop this area and bring in new business to Putnam County,” Allen said. “We’ve got to build a new facility and I think that’s what’s exciting about it all. Not that we’re losing a fairground but that we’re gaining an expo center on Tennessee Avenue.”

Allen said next year’s fair will happen at the new location if the sale goes through. He said there is little infrastructure needed and the fair could go on with renting tents and porta potty’s just like the fair’s original roots.

“No question, if we have to rent tents and porta potty’s we will have a fair next year at the new site,” Allen said. “If this property sells.”

Allen said his focus has already shifted to next year’s fair. He said this years planning is complete.

“We’re talking about next year, we’re even going to discuss who we’re going to recognize next year,” Allen said. “As volunteers and families and stuff, we’re already focused on next year.”

Allen said the current fairgrounds are what he considers the best in the state. He said with all the variety of spaces and community memories, it has served the county well if this year truly is the last at the location.
