Putnam DART Helps Clay County Animals During Flooding

Several animals had a safe place to stay as flooding affected Clay County this weekend.

Putnam County Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) traveled to Celina Saturday to set up a temporary animal shelter.

DART Representative Jeremy Richter said the shelter continued to house up to 60 animals on Monday.

“We are still sheltering animals and will be here until we aren’t needed anymore. That could be tomorrow or it could be several days from now,” Richter said.

Many of the animals came from a Clay County rescue operation that relocated because of incoming flood waters. Other residents dropped pets off at the shelter as they evacuated their homes.

Richter said the organization can always use donations, but manpower is the biggest need right now.

“This team is all volunteers and they still have jobs and families that they need to go to,” Richter said. “There’s a lot of jobs that people need to do with this. There’s walking dogs, feeding dogs and cats and cleaning.”

Putnam County DART has set up a GoFundMe page for anyone that would like to donate towards the ongoing operation.
