Putnam County Sees Savings With LED Lighting

Putnam County saw significant savings in energy costs after four buildings switched to LED lighting last year.

That according to County Executive Randy Porter.

Porter said the biggest improvement came with the county’s Agriculture Center, which saw a 44 percent decrease in energy costs.

“Not only did we change out the bulbs at that building, we replaced the roof and we replaced the old HVAC system,” Porter said. “It turned out to be great.”

The Putnam County Justice Center and the Cookeville Community Center also saw double-digit energy savings at 15 and 11 percent, respectively. The Putnam County E-911 Center saw a nine percent decrease in costs, but Porter said the building is newer and already had some LED lighting installed.

Porter said the county could look at making the switch to LED in other facilities across the county after seeing how much it saves the county in energy costs.

“It’s a good deal,” Porter said. “The new technology in the bulbs is definitely an energy saver and we want to as much of it as we possibly can, so we’re going to be looking at all aspects of it going into the future.”

Porter said other facilities that could see the upgrade to LED lighting include additional community centers and the county sports complex in Cookeville.

Monterey officials are currently looking into using LED bulbs for the city’s streetlights to help reduce energy costs.
