Putnam County Awarded Grant To Expand Sports Complex

The state has awarded Putnam County a $333,500 grant to help expand the county sports complex in Cookeville.

The project will involve building a new soccer field and a second multi-use field at the complex. The monies will also construct an access road to the facility from North Washington Avenue.

“We’re excited to be able to expand the complex,” County Executive Randy Porter said. “Our youth are out involved in these sports getting exercise and out of trouble, so we don’t have to worry about them when they are in sports.”

Part of the work will involve removing a concrete slab and asphalt to build the new soccer field along with some grading and excavation work on the multi-use field.

According to a press release, State Representative Ryan Williams said he appreciates the state’s investment in the community.

“This new field will increase local revenue and will also provide a safe environment where our children can exercise and participate in soccer activities,” Williams said.

State Senator Paul Bailey said the grant will positively impact youth in the area.

“Once completed, this project will improve the health and well-being of our current residents and also benefit our future generations,” said Bailey.

Putnam County will be required to match the total grant amount.

Porter said architectural drawing and studies will hopefully begin immediately. The grant requires the county to complete the project within two years.
