Putnam Co. Woman Died In Residential Fire On Big Orange Drive

A Putnam County woman died Wednesday in a residential fire on Big Orange Drive.

Fire Chief Tom Brown said the owner of the home was away for a few hours and came back to a house full of smoke with his wife inside.

“He went into the smoke to search for her,” Brown said. “Ultimately, found her. Dragged her out to the front porch. She was unconscious. My first firefighters on the scene initiated CPR immediately. Unfortunately, resuscitation was unsuccessful.”

Brown said the 47-year-old mother of two teenagers was home alone with three cats that also died during the fire. Brown said the home is still standing, but the living room and kitchen suffered substantial damage.

“EMS was with us right behind us,” Brown said. “Their efforts were obviously unsuccessful, also. There was really nothing else we could do.”

Brown said the fire remains under investigation. The identity of the woman is not being released at this time. According to Brown, smoke detectors were installed at the home.

“It is very discouraging,” Brown said. “We like to save lives and properties. That’s what our job is. Just unfortunately sometimes that is not possible. It is heartbreaking for all of our personnel.”
