Public Hearing On Thursday For Possible Precinct Closures

A public hearing takes place Thursday for the possible closure of two Putnam County voting locations.

Low voter turnouts led the Election Commission to recommend closing the Poplar Grove and Cornerstone precincts earlier this year.

Chairman Phil Adams said he’s hoping voters from those districts will attend Thursday night’s meeting.

“If they really want to save their district, we would love for them to come out. It’s going to be very non-confrontational,” Adams said. “Just like when Buffalo Valley came, we listened to them and we had enough people that had an interest in saving it. That’s what we want to hear, we want to really hear if people want to save those districts.”

If closed, Cornerstone would combine with the Upperman precinct and Poplar Grove with Burks Elementary School. Adams said the Election Commission has received four phone calls since recommending the closures two months ago.

“Of the four calls, one person was confused and ultimately was for closing it,” Adams said. “The other three were against it.”

The Election Commission voted earlier this year to close the Brotherton polling location and combine it with Algood Outside. The commission voted against a recommendation to close the Buffalo Valley precinct after several residents opposed the plan.

Thursday’s public hearing takes place at 6 p.m. inside the Putnam Election Election Commission office on County Services Drive.
