Pickett High School Undergoing First Section Of Repaving Project

Pickett County Schools will be repaving the high school parking lot in increments starting with the first phase approved Monday.

The Board of Education awarded a sole bidder to repave some 4,600 square feet for about $110,000. Director of Schools Diane Elder said the main road to the bus garage behind the high school will be improved.

“We’re hoping to alleviate some of the water issues we have,” Elder said. “He said he had a plan to try to drain the water away from the building where it has drained in the garage for years.”

Elder said a health grant the school received will pay for this first part. Elder said the school plans to use some $80,000 of ESSER 3.0 to pay for the other two installments.

“I think it would help with the overall appearance and with our parking situation too and with the drainage,” Elder said. “Now with the opportunity to do it out of a grant makes it even better.”

Elder said the end goal will be to install new pavement from the front to back of the high school.

“Starts right out there. Pavement to highway to pavement to highway over here,” Elder said. “It cuts off a little bit in that bid. He did three bids. There’s one little area next to the gym, behind the gym that I don’t think he put in that bid. He put it in another price. I told him we are not even going to deal with that right now until we see if we get money. I can’t do it if we don’t get the money for it.”

Elder said the parking lot will not be included in the first part of paving. Gaddie Shamrock will be the contractor doing the work.
