PCSS Updates Grade Scale For Dual Enrollment And Technical Students To Be In Line With State

Putnam County School Board has approved a new grading scale for dual enrollment and technical education courses that goes into effect for the class of 2027.

Grade 5 through 12 Curriculum Supervisor Bubba Winningham said this will come in the form of “quality points.” He said the Putnam School System is currently on a five-point scale and awards a .75 quality point for dual enrollment or industry credential classes.

Winningham said that is similar to how honors and AP courses are weighted as well. He said in order to be more in line with the state board of education’s guidelines, they have rounded up the quality points to a full point.

“We want to go ahead and incentivize those programs as well,” Winningham said. “Now our big thing with industry credentials is making that attractive to students and allowing them to be competitive with those additional quality points as well.”

Winningham said this change goes into effect across the board at every school and only impacts incoming freshmen. He said 8th-grade students currently enrolled in those classes would have that adjustment made going into next year.

“Because they’re considered that cohort of freshmen,” Winningham said. “If we have 8th graders who took, let’s say personal finance that’s an industry credential class, so under this new policy they would get the full point for that industry credential.”

Winningham said that if parents have any questions, they can reach out to counselors at their high schools. He said they should be able to clarify any information they might need.
