Overton TCAP Scores A Mixed Bag Compared To State

Overton County Schools saw a decline in some 2020 TCAP scores, but overall, majority of the schools maintained 2019’s numbers.

That is according to 7th-12th Grade Curriculum Supervisor Kim Dylan.

“I think we saw the most significant learning loss in our early grades and also our 9th graders,” Dylan said. “Sometimes those transition grades can be more difficult, but for the most part, I think it fell in our lower grade.”

Dylan said grades two through four saw a decline in both math and ELA. Dylan said the main concern now is reinforcing foundational skills and utilizing tutoring to bring students back to proficient levels.

“We are going to work on our English Language Arts,” Dylan said. “That tends to always be a focus, and we’re looking at our foundational skills in the early grades. We’ve started talking moving forward with a tutoring program through our Tennessee All Core.”

According to the state, Overton Schools were under average in Grade three ELA and Grade seven math.
