Overton Sheriff’s Office Donates Gear To Police Department Impacted By Tornado

The Overton County Sheriff’s Office has donated several light bars to a police department impacted in the tornado outbreak of December last year.

Sheriff John Garrett said the gear will be going to the Dresden Police Department located in Weakley County.

“Their equipment was just completely destroyed, and we happened to have a surplus of light bars and cages to go in vehicles,” Garrett said. “That’s a small token for us to be able to help those guys out.”

Garrett said he has been a first responder for many disasters over his career. Garrett said outside communities contribute to the recovery and his office wanted to reciprocate.

“Whether it was Macon County when the tornadoes hit Lafayette back in the mid-2000’s, Putnam County, here at home when tornadoes hit Hardy’s Chapel, and we’ve had other issues here as far as the ice storm of ’15 and the ice storm of ’21 last year,” Garrett said. “I know first hand how it is to have other first responders come here and help us, and it really made things better for our citizens here.”

The small west Tennessee town was damaged by a EF-3 Tornado on December 10th. The same storm system killed several people in Kentucky, as well

The county commission approved the gear donation Monday. Garrett said the lights will be shipped as soon as possible.
