More Licensed Child Care Facilities A Need In The Region

There is a need for more child care services in the Upper Cumberland according to two local providers.

Nana’s Child Care is the sole state licensed center in Clay County. Owner Debra Anderson said they have seven clients on hold and often turn down new business due to capacity.

“We aren’t licensed to hold as many kids as like a center in Cookeville or the larger places,” Anderson said. “So, the number that we have is about everybody’s only option if not for family and friends keeping them.”

Jackson County also only has one licensed child care in Over the Rainbow. Owner Theresa Fox said about 15 families are waiting for an opening. Fox said more providers are needed in the region but the expenses of entering child care make it tough to start.

However, a new state grant program could help with that. According to UCDD Executive Director Mark Farley, some one million dollars has been allocated to the Upper Cumberland to offset equipment and facility costs.

Fox said Essential Employee Child Care Payment Assistance lasting until August 31st also makes turnover slow since qualified families do not have to pay. Fox said she suspects more openings to come when the program ends.
