Monterey Wants To Raise Water Rates

Despite the Covid-19 economic uncertainty, Monterey’s Water/Wastewater Committee wants to move forward with a rate increase.

The plan is to have a rate increase added before the June 30th budget deadline, according to Monterey City Engineer Nathaniel Green.

“We need to be talking more seriously about a rate increase and trying to start it this year,” Green said, “Obviously we didn’t get to last year, but trying to start it this year so that we get out ahead of any potential increases that would be, you know, in the double digits of percentages.”

Green said a three to five-year gradual rate increase plan would help keep rate increases reasonable. But Green said that would need to be evaluated at a later date. The committee plans to look deeper into the rate increase when they meet again the last week of April.

The board also plans to begin cleanup of the utility’s depreciation schedule. Water Treatment Plant Supervisor Duane Jarrett said there were duplicate items and items no longer in use on the schedule.
