Monterey Store Accused Of Underage Alcohol Sales

The Monterey Beer Board meets next week to hold a disciplinary hearing for a convenience market accused of selling alcohol to minors.

The Monterey Beer Board will hold a hearing Monday evening.

The board will consider revoking or suspending the beer permit issued to Carl’s Super Market on North Chestnut Street. Mayor Bill Wiggins said store clerks allegedly sold alcohol to minors during a police operation last month.

This will be the first alcohol-related disciplinary hearing to take place in Monterey since town residents voted to permit beer sales in 2016.

The board will also consider issuing a beer permit to Tom’s Market on East Stratton Avenue. If approved, it will be the fourth business allowed to conduct beer sales inside the city. Tom’s Market would be allowed to begin selling beer the day after receiving the permit.

Monday’s meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. inside city hall.

Monterey’s beer board is made up of the board of mayor and aldermen.
