Monterey Set To Open New Section Of Rail Trail

A new section of Monterey’s walking trail will open to the public next month.

Cultural Administrator Julie Bohannon said crews still need to complete a few finishing touches.

“We have extended the trail westward another two blocks. We’ve got the asphalt poured, but there’s still some construction to be done along the sides and signs need to be put up before people are allowed on it,” Bohannon said. “But it gets us closer to that full mile that we’ve been working on and making the town more walkable.”

Monterey received a Tennessee Department of Health grant to extend the trail from the farmer’s market to Oak Street. Bohannon said Monterey will be working to extend the trail even further over the course of the next few years.

“We’ve got plans for another extension out towards Woodcliff Road,” Bohannon said. “We’re hoping that comes to fruition soon, and we’re just thankful for everybody’s patience while we work to build them a trail.”

An official grand opening for the new section of trail will take place during Standing Stone Day on October 12.
