Monterey Seeks Grant For Adding Sidewalks To Burks

Monterey has located a possible funding source for providing students a safer route to and from school.

Dawn Kupferer is the grant writer for the town of Monterey.

“The State of Tennessee Department of Health has invited us to write a grant for sidewalks and a boardwalk,” Kupferer said. “It’s about $256,000 to connect the high school and elementary school with the trail, which connects the whole town.”

Students currently have to walk down Crossville Street in order to access the trail. Kupferer said Monterey officials have wanted to conduct the project for several years.

“This is the best chance we’ve had in many years,” Kupferer said. “The State of Tennessee and the Department of Health are really concerned about getting people out walking and this is the best avenue we have for that.”

Monterey will submit the grant application on Wednesday and the state will announce grant recipients on April 26th.
