Monterey Secures Funding For Park Expansion

Monterey has secured funding for expanding Meadow Creek Park.

The Standing Stone Health Care Board of Trustees has voted to spend $42,000 to purchase five acres of land.

Monterey Alderman JJ Reels said purchasing the property makes sense because it sits next to a popular rock climbing area.

“If somebody buys that property then we’re not going to be able to use it because they could post it no trespassing and then we would have to find an alternate way to get the property that we’re planning to advertise for rock climbers,” Reels said. “It’s almost like we have to look at purchasing this property if we’re going to plan on using it in the future as an attraction.”

Mayor Bill Wiggins said the property provides easier access to the rock climbing area.

“I personally think it’s worth it,” Wiggins said. “We’ve got accessibility from the back side and from the park side.”

The property sits off Highway 62 on Connor Drive and is about 6.3 miles away from downtown Monterey.

The Standing Stone Health Care Board of Trustees voted last week to purchase the property with money set aside for quality of life purposes.

The Monterey Board of Mayor and Aldermen will look to approve the purchase when they meet next month.
