Monterey Hoping To Bid Out Paving Projects

Monterey hopes to put bids out for several paving projects within a month.

Mayor Bill Wiggins said he toured the five selected streets with an engineer last week.

“A couple of those roads, maybe three, are going to need some site preparation,” Wiggins said. “We can’t just go there and lay down asphalt. We’re gonna have to have some drainage issues addressed and some shoulder work.”

Monterey will use part of a $1 million loan to pave Old Walton Road, Railroad Avenue, New Avenue, Peter Avenue, and South Elm.

The city can pave sections of at least two of the roads immediately. Wiggins said part of Rail Road Avenue can’t be touched until some future construction takes place.

“We don’t dare pave the entirety of it,” Wiggins said. “Down towards Burks, where there’s a culvert under the road that’s part of the flooding problem, There’s gonna have to be a bridge project there. That’s got to be totally replaced. We don’t want to pave over that and then have to come back and rip it up.”

Wiggins said he expects sections of the roads to be paved before the season is over.
