Monterey High School is hosting a polar plunge to help with Project Graduation this Saturday, February 19th at 1 p.m.
Sandra Adkins is the president of the Class of 2022 Project Graduation. She said that parents raise funds throughout the year to help put on an event for the seniors on graduation night.
“The event is alcohol and drug-free,” Adkins said. “And also receive cash prizes and if we get enough funds then we can maybe do like computers, tablets, things that they’ll use in college. Maybe gift cards, just things that may help them once they graduate.”
Adkins said that to fundraise for this year, the group has held movie nights and sold stadium blankets. She said that to raise more funds in the polar plunge, they’ve been able to get community figures to participate if a fundraising goal is met.
“We’ve got the vice principal of the high school Mr. Novak,” Adkins said. “Of course, the town mayor JJ Reels and his wife, Steve Looper, he is a preacher in our town, Mike Phillips is a police lieutenant.”
Adkins said that the project is fully run by parents to help their students.
“All proceeds go to the Project Graduation Class of 2022,” Adkins said. “So students, that per se don’t have a lot of money to get started out, they have been able in the past to give each student $100, $200.”
Adkins said that for their first-ever polar plunge they’ll charge $1 dollar admission and $5 to take the plunge. The event will be held at Holpps Pine Ridge Lake.
