Monterey Alderman JJ Reels To Run For Mayor

Monterey Alderman J.J. Reels has picked up a petition to run for Mayor in the August election.

“Currently, I think it’s prime time for a new prospective and a new style of leadership,” Reels said. “I think I have all the qualities that are needed to be a good leader.”

Reels also said he wants to help Monterey grow more and has plans to take advantage of the town’s location off of Interstate 40.

“We have a great potential where we are located,” Reels said. “That would be a perfect place for a truck stop or a little shopping center with restaurants.”

Reels also expressed interest in working to revitalize the downtown area, which has sort of fallen in disrepair over the years, he said.

“With the Bank of Putnam County putting their call center in downtown, I think that’s going to bring a lot of jobs to the city,” Reels said. “I’d like to see a lot of those old buildings remodeled and repurposed for new businesses.”

Reels was appointed to fill the unexpired term of former Alderman Joey Isabell last month. Current Mayor Bill Wiggins has not announced if he will be seeking re-election.
