Miller Wants To Explore Possible Safety Measures On Broad Street

Cookeville City Council Member Mark Miller said that he’d like the city to explore changes in parking spaces in front of the Broad Street Post Office.

Miller said that after an incident on Saturday where a young girl was struck by a truck and air flighted to Vanderbilt Hospital, something should be done to increase safety.

“To me anytime there is actual evidence of someone getting hurt from a vehicle accident, what can we do to improve the safety of that area,” Miller said. “And adding that visibility I think would definitely improve safety of people trying to cross the road or even cars going up and down Broad Street.”

Miller said that the spots are currently angled and jut out into the street. He said that he would like to explore the possibility of turning them parallel to increase visibility.

Miller said that it would lose about four spaces, but that it could also increase the street width of the street by about five feet. He said that increased width could help with left turn issues.

“And then in the future, I would like to look at enhancing some crosswalks,” Miller said. “Maybe in front of city hall or in front of Dogwood Park. Some of the places where people travel back and forth across Broad Street a lot just to make it a safer location for them.”
