Law Enforcement to Participate in Second Safe on Seventy

Law enforcement across the Upper Cumberland and Tennessee will participate in the second Safe on Seventy Campaign this year.

Cumberland Region Law Enforcement Liaison Fred Sherrill said Tennessee law enforcement hopes to cut down on unsafe driving habits this Fall.

“We just wanted to do it again in the Fall because there are a lot more people getting out with the seasons changing, looking at leaves and that kind of stuff,” Sherrill said. “We are just wanting to try to keep them safe while they are out doing that. ”

The second Safe on Seventy Campaign will begin Tuesday and end Friday.

Sherill said the last Safe on Seventy Campaign helped cut down on fatal crashes on Highway 70.

“It was awesome. To be short with you about it, what we did, we went out and done saturation and checkpoints throughout the entire state from Bristol to Memphis on Highway 70,” Sherrill said. “We incorporated in the Tennessee Highway Patrol and all local law enforcement agencies and everybody just came out and helped us out.”

During the course of the last campaign, Tennessee law enforcement wrote approximately 3,000 citations, Sherril said.

Leading up to the campaign, law enforcement conducted a study on Highway 70, Sherril said.

“What we found was that on Tuesdays, and I know you would think Friday and Saturday but it wasn’t, Tuesday was a high crash day. So we narrowed it down to a timeline,” Sherill said. “And what we did, we instituted the saturations and checkpoints and stuff from 11 AM to 7 PM on Tuesday. And then we picked our second day which was a Friday and did the same thing on that Friday. ”

Sherrill said the study involved crash data in a statewide law enforcement software.

“Titan is an accident software things that keeps a running total of data. All law enforcement agencies use Titan so we are able to pull all that data in so we can go back in,” Sherrill said. “And look at different roadways and different areas where we are having those crashes so we can put law enforcement in those areas. ”

Over the course of the next four days, Sherrill said he hopes to cut down on dangerous driving behavior.

“My expectations would be zero crashes but I know that is far-reaching, which we are always striving for zero,” Sherrill said. “But we hope to decrease crashes more than what we did earlier in the year when we did it. ”

The Safe on Seventy Campaign will take place from October 23 to October 26.
