Council Approves Cane Creek Land Purchase

Cane Creek Park will expand by more than 31 acres after Cookeville City Council approved a $350,000 land purchase Thursday night.

City Manager James Mills presented the property off of Buffalo Valley Road to the city council. He said the land owner reached out to the city to gauge interest in the land. Mills said the land owner’s desire was to expand the park and asked the city not to resell the property for 99 years.

“You know this, opportunities to expand the park are rare,” Mills said. “Especially considering the size of this property and I would respectfully request that the council ratify.”

The 31 acres are located on the southern boundary of Cane Creek Park. The price breaks down to just over $11,000 an acre.

Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said his team had talked about this land in developing a long-term plan for the park in recent years. The land purchase should be completed by the end of the year.
