Jackson County Mayor Meets With Army Corps To Discuss Roaring River Park

The Army Corps of Engineers told Jackson County Mayor Randy Heady that flooding is common in a park like Roaring River Park.

Heady said the Corps simply knows flooding will happen, and the you close and clean up debris. However, Heady said they did talk tourism possibilities.

“We talked about campgrounds a little bit and the possibility of some time, some where in future there being a campground,” Heady said. “At what we call the third boat dock.”

Heady said this would be a camper and RV campground, and the Army Corps of Engineers opened his eyes to the need for easy accessibility into the park. Heady said this kind of input allows the master plan to evolve into a reality that benefits the park and community.

“They also brought up some good points about Roaring River Park and the flooding issues that we have and what we’re doing there and what we want to do,” Heady said. “With that being said, they also gave some really positive input into some things I knew. Because the park floods, it’s not a negative to put it there, that’s actually fine. Parks are typically in flood plains and so you know that a park is going to flood.”

Heady said the meeting emphasized the point of implementing the master plan one piece at a time. He said doing things the right way and continuing the relationship could lead to a possibility of a lease with the Army Corps of Engineers in the future.
