Interim Finance Director Appointed In Fentress County

Fentress County has appointed an interim deputy finance director after voting to fire former finance director Marsha Delk.

Delk was fired this week for giving raises to finance and solid waste department employees without receiving approval from the county commission.

Fentress County Executive J. Michael Cross said Kellye Cooper will temporarily lead the finance department.

“She’s very knowledgeable and has been in several roles within the department,” Cross said. “She comes with a good amount of experience and we think she will offer some stability at this current time.”

Cross said the unapproved raises amounted to some $41,000 since 2015. Most of those raises went to finance department employees.

“The two raises that happened with the solid waste employees were deserving because they had both been promoted,” Cross said. “The problem was that it didn’t go through the proper channels.”

According to the county’s investigation, Delk failed to bring the raises before the Finance Committee. Although the money was present in the budget, the money was not officially allocated to pay raises.

Total unauthorized raises amounted to 12 thousand dollars in October 2015 and seven thousand in December 2016.
