Holman Settling In As Interim Overton Co. Schools Director

Overton County Interim Director of Schools Donnie Holman said his first few weeks of leading the school system has gone well.

Holman said while it has been busy, the help from central office staff has made for a smooth transition.

“Although I am learning a lot, I feel like I have really gotten a lot done in a short period of time, and I hope that progress can continue,” Holman said. “Because, my goal is to in everything I do really keep the students in mind and focus on them, and I hope all of my decisions are based around their success.”

Holman said he appointed Julie Poston to serve as interim director at Rickman Elementary, so he could focus on the director’s role.

“That is a misconception,” Holman said. “There are some people that think that. I hired an interim principal to take my place. She (Poston) was my vice-principal for several years. We always worked closely with each other.”

Holman replaced past Director Mark Winningham who was removed by the Board of Education earlier this month. Holman said he is not opposed to permanently filling the position but wants to wait and see how the year plays out. For now, Holman focuses on education.

“I want to make the school system as successful as it can be,” Holman said. “I want our students to be prepared and to be ready. One of the best ways to take care of the students is to take care of the teachers.”

Holman said as director, he wants students to reach their full potential and to plan ahead for further education.
