F-4 Tornado Hits Putnam County Tuesday

The National Weather Service (NWS) has confirmed that an F-4 tornado struck northwest Putnam County Tuesday morning.

Meteorologist said wind speeds reached at least 175 miles per hour as the twister carved a path of destruction along a stretch of Highway 70 between the city limits of Baxter and Cookeville.

Officials on Wednesday identified 18 people who died during the storm. Only one person remained unaccounted for as of 9 p.m. officials identified that person as Leah Suzanne Weeks. Anyone with information about her whereabouts should contact 931-646-INFO.

88 people suffered injuries during the storm. Many if those individuals remain hospitalized.

The NWS will determine the exact path and width of the tornado in the coming days.

It marked the first violent tornado to strike the NWS Nashville forecast area since April 2019.
