Extra funds for Pickett County’s fishing tournament sponsorship is awarded to the Chamber of Commerce.
Commissioners approved a $3,000 donation for two national tournaments in the fall and spring. Chamber Director Bill Robbins requested $5,000 during the Monday meeting.
“I’m talking to you…about something that’s going to happen now,” Robbins said. “It’s going to be tangible and you’re going to see it in your pockets in the next 60 days of these two major [events], and then in next spring you’re going to see it again. And the beauty of all of this is it’s happening when everything else is dying down.”
The board voted for the $3,000 to match the City of Byrdstown’s donation. Robbins said his proposed $5,000 is a 10 percent cut from a $50,000 federal grant refund the county will receive over the next few weeks.
The county was awarded a $50,000 Threestar grant with $22,000 going to emergency services equipment, $18,000 went to technology for students, and the remaining $10,000 for a LED sign at the chamber office. Robbins said since the county has already completed the projects, the chamber can request a refund that returns to the county’s pocket.
The Renegade Fishing Tournament is October 19 thru 24. The FLW Fishing tournament is the week after and again in March.
In other business, the county commission approved a $24,733 bid from BIS Digital to install a courtroom video arraignment system. With the system installed, inmates will not have to be transported. Additionally, the new system would alleviate the court recorder who is paid $6,000 annually from the county.
