Expert: UC Residents Should Check Policy On Wind Damage

A local insurance expert said last week’s tornado should serve as a reminder for Upper Cumberland residents to check their homeowner’s policy for wind damage coverage.

Overton County Farm Bureau Manager Christy Key said wind damage can be in the form of damaging roofs, side shingles, windows, and window screens. Key said she encourages homeowners to be educated on their homeowner’s policy.

“A lot of times people really just don’t understand the type of coverage that they have,” Key said. “A misconception is oh I’ve got an insurance policy, I’ve paid my premium that should cover everything but that may not be the case.”

Key said most homeowner insurance policies cover wind damage but it never hurts to make sure that you are covered. Key said whether it is minor or major damage the best thing to do is to call your insurance provider.

“In both scenarios take pictures of what you see and then you know if there is exposure to the roof you definitely probably want to go ahead and file that claim by calling your insurance agent to protect your assets and to prevent further damage.”

Key said other items like tractors, sheds, and outhouses may not be covered and that when obtaining an insurance policy people need to make it clear what all they would like covered under the policy.

“Those questions need to be asked to your agent,” Key said. “And because as an agent we may not know what you have and having that great communication between your agent and you is very important.”

Key not all insurance providers can provide the same coverage as rules and guidelines can vary. Key said if the damage is not worth more than the deductible then the insurance provider will not cover the expense to repair or replace the damage.
