Dekalb FD Replacing 42 Year Old Fire Engine In Liberty

The Dekalb County Fire Department is getting a new fire engine and equipment thanks to federal funding.

Chief Donny Green said the new engine will be stationed in Liberty. Green said this will replace a 1979 fire engine, which is a help to avoid a vehicle going out of service before it is set to be replaced.

“We’ll be doing the bid process here in the coming weeks,” Green said. “So that will go out for bid and then the winning bidder will be given the purchase order, then we’ll go from there. We don’t expect we’ll have it delivered before early spring of 2022.”

Green said that with engine being stationed at each of its 12 fire departments, it is crucial to make sure service can be provided in the area. Green said that $137,500 is being provided by the federal government, with the county paying the remainder of the $250,000 project.

“This will also include the necessary equipment to go on the truck,” Green said. “Such as the nozzles and the hoses and the loose equipment that we use. The hand tools that go on a fire truck.”

The county was contacted by Rural Development and made aware that a census tract in the western portion of the county met the programs priorities for funds set aside to improve community facilities and safety initiatives. The grant application was filed and will be administered by UCDD.
