Cumberland Commissioners Decides Against Capitol Resolution

After concerns about dividing the community further, Cumberland County Commissioners voted to remove a resolution condemning the storming of the Nation’s Capitol from Tuesday night’s agenda.

“I feel like this entire resolution is completely unnecessary,” Commissioner Mark Baldwin said. “I think the taxpaying citizens of Cumberland County would rather us focus on county issues and not be passing resolutions.”

Commissioner Joe Sherrill said he had received numerous emails and calls from citizens asking how the resolution made Cumberland County better. He said he feared it simply would be more divisive.

Commissioners Deborah Holbrook, Nancy Hyder, and Terry Lowe proposed the resolution. Commissioner Rebecca Stone proposed an addition to the resolution that would have condemned all violent protests during 2020.

The 17-1 vote by commissioners removed the item from the agenda without a vote.
