Counties See Record Unemployment

Gov. Bill Haslam’s office announced all 95 Tennessee counties saw a drop in unemployment numbers Thursday.

Overton County’s unemployment dropped a full percentage point to 3.8 percent.

Overton County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Greg McDonald said diverse business opportunities are driving the numbers down.

“That’s our goal is to be diverse, we got another company we’re working with right now, I just got off the phone with them, they should be making an announcement here, if everything goes as planned, in the next 30 days,” McDonald said.

McDonald said officials are focusing on one part of Livingston and helping it grow.

“We’ve done a lot of things to our downtown community, we’ve added a park, we’ve had a downtown revitalization committee and pushed to revitalize downtown, we feel as the town goes so will the city and the county,” McDonald said.

The latest employment opportunity in Overton County officially opens Friday. Tractor Supply Co. will hold its grand opening at 4:30 p.m.
