Clay County to Kick Off Sesquicentennial Celebration

Clay County will kick-off its sesquicentennial celebration tomorrow. Clay County’s sesquicentennial year starts in 2020.

Kevin Donaldson is Executive Director of the Clay County Partnership Chamber of Commerce.

“The kick-off event set for this year will be June 23 and we are planning that event in June as a kick off just to let everybody know that 2020 is not that far away,” Donaldson said. “And there is a lot of work that needs to be done. And we hope to make up a day long of activities for June 23 this year.”

The kick-off event will have various activities, including a history booth and a genealogy station.

Donaldson said he was especially excited about the digitization station.

“One of the big things we are really excited about is that we will have a digitization station set up. So folks can bring their historic documents and photos and have them scanned and not have to leave them with anybody,” Donaldson said. “We will have two or three scanners set up. They’ll just literally be able to hand it to a committee member and get it back in just a couple minutes and share an important part of Clay County history.”

Part of the kick-off event is a call for volunteers for the sesquicentennial celebration. Donaldson said the chamber already has enough volunteers for the kick-off day, but they are in need of volunteers for 2020.

“It’s a big day for us in June coming up and it’s a big year coming up in 2020,” Donaldson said. “And we really need a lot of folks to volunteer to help make all these things happen.”

Donaldson said Clay County residents should enjoy the county’s 150th anniversary.

“You only have a sesquicentennial once and a lot of us can still remember all the way back to the centennial celebration,” Donaldson said. “It was a really, really big deal. It wasn’t a single day or even a couple days of activities, but it was a year-long event, and we are hoping to do that in 2020 as well. “
