The Clay County Commission created a five member committee Monday night tasked with studying employee raises.
Commissioner Bryan Coons said he has a salary schedule ready to be reviewed. Coons said job descriptions and years of service would determine an employees pay.
“The last time we did this in 2012 a lot of people got raises bigger than others and some people got raises and some people didn’t,” Coons said. “This new salary schedule is straight across the board raises.”
Coons said the starting pay for most county employees would also increase. Coons said he wanted to form the committee, so each district would be represented before a recommendation to the full commission was made.
“I would like to do is get a subcommittee of the county commissioners, one from each district after a planning meeting and go over this,” Coons said. “Update any changes they look and see, make the changes and take it to all the county officials so they can see it. Then, bring it to the full commission.”
Coons said the goal would be to implement the raises at the start of 2022. The committee consists of Commissioners Michael Miller, Anthony Boles, Dorothy Forney, Parrish Wright and Coons.
“It’s just about done,” Coons said. “All we got to do is agree on it and make changes. If somebody sees something that they think is bad, we will take it out.”
Commissioner Dorothy Forney agreed with forming the committee and said, “We do need to go over the salaries.”
In other business during Monday’s commission meeting, members voted 6-3 against purchasing some four acres by Hermitage Springs Park. The original asking price was $12,000, but Commissioner Elizabeth Boles said the price was hiked to $20,000.
The land was to be used for park parking or a possible community center for the area.
Commissioners Jerry Rhoton, Anthony Boles, Michael Miller, Elizabeth Boles, Dorothy Forney and Timmy Boles voted no. Commissioners Bryan Coons, Timmie Scott and Parrish Wright voted yes.
