Christmas Lights Purchased For Downtown Monterey

Downtown Monterey will be decorated with Christmas lights and bows this year.

The Standing Stone Historical Society has voted to purchase the lights and bows with money from the Monterey Hometown Project.

Standing Stone Historical Society President Anita Lane said it’s the first project funded through the Monterey Hometown Project.

“When we had Christmas decorations before, a lot of times it was the Monterey businesses and civic organizations who donated funds to purchase those,” Lane said. “This was one of the reasons we decided to come up with Monterey Hometown Project.”

Lane said the decorations and lights will be placed on light poles running along the South Holly and East Commercial Avenue.

The Monterey Hometown Project began at the beginning of the year as a way to celebrate the town’s 125th anniversary. The project seeks to engage current and past residents in revitalizing Monterey.

Civic leaders have set a goal to raise $125,000 in private funds that will be used for town improvements and beautification projects.

“This is the first big purchase and hopefully it will not be the last,” Lane said. “We have plans for other things that we can use the money for.”

The project has raised a little over $18,000 in nearly eight months.
