Carl Haney Named New Cookeville Electric Director

Cookeville City Manager Mike Davidson announced Operations Superintendent Carl Haney will be the electric department’s next director.

Haney said he looks forward to taking over the position and leading the city’s electric department after current director Tony Peek announced his retirement.

“I’m excited about it and very appreciative of the opportunities the city has given me and just look forward to working with everybody,” Haney said. “Tony’s been the director for over 30 years so I’ve [gathered] a tremendous amount of knowledge from him and working with him for all these years.”

Haney said he looks forward to continue working with Cookeville’s council members and other officials on projects around the city.

“We work with the city manager and city council on those projects and I’ve been heavily involved in them,” Haney said. “We’ll just continue that and work with them on the projects we’d just like to see get done.”

Haney said he’s been very fortunate to work for the Cookeville Electric Department for nearly 25 years.

“We focus on customer service and keeping the rates as low as we can and providing the best power we can out there for the public,” Haney said. “We just want to continue that and continue the operations that we do on down the road.”

In a press release, City Manager Mike Davidson spoke highly of Haney’s experience and abilities to serve as the newest head of the CED.

“Carl Haney has extensive knowledge and experience with the Cookeville electric system and possesses the skills and abilities to make a smooth transition,” Davidson said in the release. “Mr. Haney has proven his capability to serve and lead the department and will handle the duties well.”

Peek is slated to retire at the beginning of February next year with Haney taking over Feb. 2. He began his career with the Cookeville Electric Department in 1994 and has served as the operations superintendent for nine years.
