CARC Looking to Increase Number of Students, Tutors

The Cumberland Adult Reading Council (CARC) is looking to increase its number of students and tutors.

Executive Director Mary Coates said growing the program is one of her biggest priorities as the new director.

“I think there is a big need because, let’s face it, if you can’t read, it’s really difficult to be successful,” Coates said.

Coates said sometimes it can be difficult to reach potential students who have difficulty reading.

“If they have a difficulty reading, then obviously it’s going to be hard for them to pick up one of our brochures and know what we do,” Coates said.

Coates was hired into her new role last month. She is proud of CARC and the effect it has had on the Upper Cumberland community.

“It’s tremendous satisfaction knowing that our agency has been able to help those that are struggling with basic skills,” Coates said.

Coates said simply getting the word out about CARC and word-of-mouth could get those with reading difficulties the help they need.

Before arriving at CARC, Coates was a volunteer coordinator for nine years at the Avalon Center, assisting victims of domestic or sexual assault.

For more information on CARC, call the program’s office at (931) 337-5809. Coates said those interested in the program can also visit the office at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology, Building 1, Room 109.
