Byrdstown Approves Bid For Repaving Main Street Lot

Byrdstown Board of Aldermen will move forward with repaving the parking lot at the Main Street Park.

The board approved the low bid of $95,500 from Rogers Group, which was an estimated $59,000 cheaper than the other bid received. Byrdstown Mayor Sam Gibson said he expected the project to cost around $100,000 and was relieved to see a bid within the town’s price range.

“You know I was glad when the other bid come in and it was quite a bit less,” Gibson said. “But it made me feel a little bit better, but I can understand why people you know sometimes have to kind of look ahead and think well whenever we do a bid it’s for that job no matter if things do go up or down.”

Gibson said the new pavement should last for quite some time as two-inch compact asphalt is considered to be very durable.

“We just felt like that it would be great to just go ahead and put a really good coat,” Gibson said. “And that’s gonna last for a long time. That will probably last 20-30 years, especially for us.”

Gibson said he expects the contractor to begin repaving as soon as weather permits. Gibson said he hopes to have the repavement completed by mid-May.

“We like to have it done by the middle of May,” Gibson said. “And the reason for it is because we have so many activities that do start, you know, after Memorial weekend and things take off over there.”

Gibson said the park should not be largely impacted as he expects the repaving to only last one to two days. Gibson said the town will have to implement some risers so storm drains will not be affected during the repaving process. Gibson said the facilities at the park are in great shape except the parking lot.
