Burn Permits Required Starting Sunday

Folks wanting to burn brush will need a permit starting Sunday.

Statewide, folks outside of cities and towns will need a permit from the county or state forestry service to burn.

The burn permit season runs from October 15 to May 15 each year.

Putnam County Fire Chief Tom Brown said it’s a good thing.

“It is the dry season and I know that sounds backwards but it is the dry season, humidity is generally lower and vegetation is dying off, so it’s dryer,” Brown said.

Last year’s dry season was particularly difficult but Brown doesn’t think that will be the case this year.

“We’ve already had quite a bit more precipitation than we did last year at this time, I think our last stretch was 14-15 days without rain and it was starting to get dry but we got a couple inches and it’s supposed to rain today, so I don’t anticipate that it’s going to be dry enough to be a problem,” Brown said.

City residents need to contact your city government to check local burning laws, Brown said.
