Board Sets Teacher Suspension Appeal Window

The Overton County School Board has given a Livingston Academy teacher a thirty-day window to request an appeal hearing for her four-day suspension.

Teacher Julie Miller suspended due to unprofessional behavior. The official document details conversation Miller had with her students in which Miller made multiple graphic comments in an attempt to stop her students from discussing the ongoing controversy surrounding celebrity P. Diddy. Director of Schools Donnie Holman said Miller has the right to a hearing before a hearing officer who would be appointed by Holman himself.

“Based upon these charges as director of schools, I recommend that Ms. Miller be suspended from service for a four-day term as a tenured teacher,” Holman said. “Since that suspension has already occurred, any hearing requested would be to determine the sufficiency of the charges that warranted the suspension.”

A student recorded the conversation which included sexual descriptions. The document said that Miller was receptive to correction and apologetic about the incident. Holman maintained his initial decision to suspend her.

Holman said Miller’s teaching license will be flagged while state’s licensure review board looks into the matter.

“Just until the review board looks at it and makes their determination,” Holman said. “After that then the flag will go off.”

Per Holman’s request, the charges against Miller will be attached to the minutes from Monday’s meeting.
