Bailey Co-Sponsors Property Tax Relief Bill For Elderly And veterans

A bill benefiting veterans received final State Senate approval last week.

Senator Paul Bailey co-sponsored the bill, which will ensure that veterans can continue to qualify for property tax relief if they are hospitalized or temporarily placed in a nursing home but intend to return home.

Bailey said there have been cases where the property tax relief had been denied due to a temporary stay in the hospital or rehabilitation center due to conditions like a hip replacement.

He said the legislation closes a loophole and corrects an injustice in keeping with the law’s intent that veterans and elderly should receive property tax relief.

An amendment was added to the bill so that it would apply to elderly homeowners who qualify for the property tax relief and who are temporarily out of their home as well.
