American Legion Hosting Fishing Derby For Foster Families

Putnam County’s American Legion Post 46 bringing foster families a free fishing derby Saturday.

Post Member Richard Buford said the event takes place at the Twin Lakes Catfish Farm. Buford said registration begins at 8:00 a.m. Buford said all of the Upper Cumberland is welcome to join.

“They just need to bring their fishing poles and their kids,” Buford said. “We’re going to have a wonderful event rain or shine. We’re going to give a lot of awards out, a lot of candy for the kids and a lot of toys for the kids.”

Buford said the fishing contest begins at 9:00 a.m. Afterwards, the post will provide lunch and have activities such as horseshoes. Buford said the event serves as a gateway to provide benefits for foster children.

“All foster children from families that need our help and support, we want them to come out and to meet us,” Buford said. “We’ll talk about our program and our scholarships and some of the youth programs that they would find to be very beneficial.”

Buford said caring for foster children is one of the pillars of the American Legion. Buford said the organization will be there to gauge what special needs can be met. But most importantly, the event provides an opportunity for kids to have fun.

“We got a lot of special gifts that have been donated,” Buford said. “Everybody will have a good time. Rain or shine, the catfish will be hungry. We’re hoping they’ll come and all these kids get a wonderful picture with a catfish from the pond.”

Buford said the event is not exclusive just to foster families. Buford said others can join by paying an $8 registration fee. Twin Lakes Catfish Farm in Baxter is located at 580 Gainesboro Hwy.
